Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is an accelerated academic program designed to provide support to students who are in the academic “middle.” Students must apply to be in AVID and interview with a panel of faculty members before being accepted into the program.
These students want to work harder and be more successful and they commit to a variety of obligations – including reserving adequate time to complete assignments for all subjects each night (approximately 1 -2 hours is recommended).
The purpose of AVID is to move students from average level classes to more rigorous college-preparatory coursework while providing academic support. During each AVID class, students receive instruction in reading/writing across the cirriculum, note taking and test taking strategies, study skills, organization and time management. Additionally, as part of the AVID class, students receive approximately 40 minutes of tutoring from trained tutors who volunteer their time to work in the AVID classrooms.
