2013 Summer School Information Brochure

Prom and graduation are important events in the lives of graduating high school seniors.  Anne Arundel County Public Schools and the Anne Arundel County Department of Health encourage youth to participate in senior events that are safe and alcohol free.  Parents are encouraged to speak to their graduating seniors concerning the dangers of underage drinking, including the health, family and legal consequences of use.

Seniors will recieve a brochure explaining the Play It Safe Project, a nationally recognized drug and alcohol abuse prevention program developed for graduates who celebrate the end of high school in Ocean City, MD.  This project includes public awareness, education and alternative activities.  Some of the alcohol-free events being held in Ocean City during senior week include laser tag, 3-on-3 basketball tournaments, midnight bowling, volleyball tournaments, miniature golf and kaaoke.

For more information on the Play It Safe Project, visit www.playitsafeoceancity.com

In order to ensure that all students in the Class of 2014 and their parents understand what is required by the Maryland State Department of Education and the Anne Arundel County Public Schools Board of Education to earn a high school diploma, the South River High School Counseling Office will hold 2 meetings over the summer to discuss the Graduation Notification Agreement.

The Graduation Notification Agreement (also known as the Senior Contract) outlines the number of credits a student has earned by the end of their Junior year and lists the credit requirements that still must be met in order to graduate at the end of May.  It also shows the High School Completer Path, earned Service Learning Hours, and the High School Assessments.

During the meetings Counselors will discuss the college application process, how to request transcripts and find scholarship money as well as other post-high school planning issues.  Questions are welcome.

Parent signature is required on the Graduation Notification Agreement.  For that reason, parents are highly encouraged to attend ONE of these events.

Sessions will be held on

Wednesday, August 7

Baruch Talbott, SRHS Senior and Author of “In the Middle of the Line,” will be visiting the Annapolis Branch Library on Monday, May 20, 2013 at 7pm.

Readers will be inspired by the story of Baruch Talbott, a young orphan who grew up in the crosshairs of the Second Liberian Civil War near the turn of the 21st century. With story and insight provided by Talbott, this fast-paced book is arranged in short chapters that capture pivotal moments in Talbott’s life, including unspeakable terror that tested his courage and resolve. Talbott’s life lessons continued when he was adopted by an American family at the age of nine.

Reminiscent of his African heritage, Talbott recited his memories aloud and Debby Coughlan brought them to life with her written interpretation. Talbott’s original words are captured in four interludes throughout the book, including the prologue and epilogue. The heartwarming, sincere account will resonate with older youth and adults.

Any student wishing to park on campus for the Fall Semester MUST APPLY for a permit.

Applications for Fall Parking may be accessed at the link below and are available in the school office.

All applications and supporting documents must be HAND CARRIED by the APPLICANT ONLY to Ms Jentilet in the Main Office by June 14, 2013. Late applications can still be turned in, but will go to the bottom of the pile.

Students may apply for parking with a valid Maryland Learner’s Permit.  A copy of the applicant’s new Maryland Driver’s license will be required before a parking pass may be issued for anyone who applied with a Learner’s Permit.
