Are you into the art of fashion?

Fashion design and illustration are the backbone of the clothing industry.  Every piece of clothing begins the trip to the runway with a picture.  Now you can learn how to create the image that will bring your fashion ideas to life using fashion industry standard software and hand drawing techniques.

Coming for the 2012 /2013 school year are 2 NEW course offerings in computer assisted design for fashion illustration.

CAD for Fashion I – Learn how basic software applications, like Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and CAD can be used in the fashion design industry

CAD for Fashion II – Build on the knowledge gained in CAD Fashion I and work with Adobe Illustrator to create your own designs

Both courses bring real world practices into the classroom with examples of product development research and documentation, trending fashion, goods estimation, the use of production design boards, marketing, merchandising and product presentation.   You will leave the program with the skills you will need to compete in the design room and in the marketplace.

Want more information, see Mrs Galloway in the Art Department.  Want to sign up?  Be sure to mention it to your counselor when registering for next year’s course selections.

Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for the American Cancer Society (ACS).  It is not a race!  People form teams from churches, workplaces, schools, or families who want to Relay in honor of a relative/friend.  Team members take turns walking the laps throughout the evening – that’s where the “relay” in Relay For Life comes from.

South County Relay for Life

It’s a party atmosphere with special events (opening ceremony, luminaria ceremony, fight back ceremony), games, give-aways, activities, bands, and lots to buy!  We will have a dodgeball tournament, karaoke, volleyball tournament, special themed laps, a live auction, Queen of the Relay, water balloon toss, and more!

All donations collected go toward research, education and patient services.  Some of those funds also go to the Young Survivor Scholarship program which provides a $500 stipend per academic year to college-bound pediatric cancer survivors in need of financial aid.

The Cool Schools Challenge is back and better than ever.

The SRHS Snohawks will be taking to the water in Sandy Point State Park on Frigid Friday, January 27, 2012 at the stroke of noon, to raise funds for Special Olympics Maryland, the state’s largest year-round organization devoted to sports training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

The team fundraising goal is $20,000, and we need your help to reach it!  No, we are not asking you to take the Plunge with us; instead, we are hoping you will make a donation to Special Olympics Maryland on behalf of the SRHS Snohawks for the 2012 MSP Plunge.  Any amount would be appreciated – it all goes to a wonderful cause, and every little bit gets us that much closer to our goal.

To make it easy to contribute, we have arranged several options:

  1. Visit the SRHS Cool School Challenge – Team Snohawks website at  2012 Cool School Challenge to make a general donation to the team or in the name of a team member.
  2. Visit the MSP Plunge website, plungemd.com/donationinfo.shtml, where you can sponsor a plunger or make a general donation.
  3. Pay by check to the school.  Checks may be made payable to “South River High School.”  Please note that the donation is for Special Olympics and send it, in care of Doug Brown, to the SRHS office.
  4. Make a donation directly to the Special Olympics.  Checks, made out to SOMD, may be mailed to Special Olympics, SOMD, 513 Progress Drive, Suite P, Linthicum, MD 21090.  Please write “Doug Brown, SRHS,” in the memo area so that your contribution will be credited to South River High School.

To learn more about this wacky winter event, visit www.plungemd.com to find out all the chilly details. For questions about contributions or to sign up to join the team, contact Doug Brown at drbrown2@aacps.org.

Relay for Life June 22

This year’s Relay for Life , the American Cancer Society’s annual fund raiser, will be held here at South River High School on June 22, 2012, beginning at 6:00pm and ending at 6:00am, June 23, 2012.
